Work at Height and Rope Access

Today, work at height is a specialist field combining construction expertise, industrial maintenance, safety management and modern rope-access techniques. These methods are used worldwide on wind turbines, telecommunications masts, industrial plants, ports, bridges, properties and infrastructure.

What does rope access mean?

Rope access is a method in which workers use rope systems designed for work at height to reach the work location and safely perform the required tasks. It enables access to places that would otherwise be difficult to reach or would require extensive scaffolding or lifting equipment.

Professional rope access is always based on careful advance planning, risk assessment and safety procedures, using only inspected, certified and approved equipment.

In many cases, work at height can be completed considerably faster than with conventional methods, reducing both project costs and disruption.

Rope-access methods can be used for many tasks, including:

  • Façade maintenance and repair
  • Window and façade cleaning
  • Industrial inspections and maintenance
  • Wind-turbine maintenance and inspections
  • Mast and tower inspections
  • Steel-structure installations
  • Fall-protection system installations
  • Painting and coating work
  • Condition assessments and measurements
  • Snow and ice removal

Benefits of work at height

One major reason for the growing use of rope access is cost-efficiency. Designing, transporting, erecting and dismantling conventional scaffolding can represent a large share of total project cost, and rope access can often eliminate these stages.

Another benefit is speed: a skilled rope-access team can mobilize quickly and start work without long preparation, reducing downtime in industry.

Rope access can also reduce environmental impact because less heavy equipment is required.

Rope access is particularly suitable where:

  • A MEWP cannot be used
  • Scaffolding is expensive
  • The work area is confined
  • Terrain is challenging
  • The work location is high
  • Use of the structure should not be interrupted

Safety is the foundation of everything

Safety is always the primary objective at work at height. Modern rope access is based on internationally recognized standards that minimize risk and allow controlled work even in highly demanding conditions.

We follow the international IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) system, the world’s best-known rope-access safety system. A central principle is the use of two independent ropes: a working rope and a completely separate safety rope.

Every site is assessed in advance, and risks are carefully identified before work begins.

Each worker also uses:

  • Certified harnesses
  • Descent and ascent devices
  • Back-up devices
  • Rescue equipment
  • Helmets and PPE
  • Regularly inspected ropes and anchoring system.
